India has added a major milestone to its infrastructure network with the inauguration of the 594-km Ganga Expressway by Narendra Modi on April 29. Connecting Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east, the project stands among the country’s largest greenfield expressways and has been completed in under three and a half years. Designed to unlock the economic potential of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the corridor is expected to significantly improve freight movement, reduce logistics costs, and shorten transit times. The expressway also incorporates AI-enabled camera systems to enhance road safety through real-time monitoring and alerts. Adding a strategic dimension, a 3.5-km stretch in Shahjahanpur has been developed as an Emergency Landing Facility for the Indian Air Force, enabling dual-use functionality for defense and civilian needs. Developed under a public-private partnership model by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority, the project saw major participation from private players. Adani Road Transport Limited executed nearly 80% (464 km) of the expressway, while IRB Infrastructure handled the remaining 130 km. The six-lane, access-controlled expressway—expandable to eight lanes—aligns with national initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti, the National Infrastructure Pipeline, and the Bharatmala Programme, reinforcing India’s push toward a more efficient and integrated transport network.
