Global air freight rates surge as fuel costs climb

Global air freight rates continue to climb, with the Baltic Air Freight Index rising 9.3 per cent week-on-week in the period ending March 30 and standing 10per cent higher year-on-year, according to TAC Index. The upward trend is being fuelled in part by soaring jet fuel prices, which have doubled compared to last year, increasing cost pressures across the sector. TAC noted that rates could climb even further— potentially reaching or exceeding peak season levels—even if geopolitical tensions ease quickly. Meanwhile, spot rates from key export hubs such as Hong Kong, India, and Korea have either increased or remained consistently high, signalling sustained demand and tightening capacity in global air cargo markets.
