Siemens has officially handed over the first batch of 9,000 HP electric freight locomotives to Indian Railways, marking a milestone in India’s rail journey. The high-powered D9 locomotives, capable of speeds up to 120 kmph, are among the world’s most powerful freight engines and the first rolling stock in India certified under European Standard EN 14363. The project achieved commercial deployment within 36 months of the award of the contract. Manufacturing is underway at Siemens’ Dahod facility in Gujarat, while maintenance depots are being set up in Vizag, Raipur, Kharagpur, and Pune, with the Visakhapatnam unit already operational. The partnership includes 35 years of maintenance support to ensure long-term efficiency, reliability, and performance.
