Northern Railway is exploring introduction of AC cargo trains to transport fruits from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) to key markets across India, marking a potential shift in the region’s agri-logistics landscape. The initiative aims to strengthen cold chain infrastructure for high-value produce, such as apples and cherries by enabling temperature-controlled transit. This is expected to reduce spoilage, extend the shelf life, and improve prices for growers. Faster, rail-based distribution could cut post-harvest losses, while enhancing market access for farmers. The move aligns with efforts to modernise horticulture supply chains in J&K. If implemented, it could redefine how the Valley’s fresh produce is moved, efficiently, reliably, and at scale.
