Western Railway has achieved a milestone in India’s freight logistics by dispatching its first spice train from Mehsana of Gujarat to Assam. The shipment carried 4,200 quintals of cumin, marking the first organised rail movement of spices on this route and strengthening trade linkage between western and northeastern India. The initiative is likely to provide Gujarat’s spice industry with faster market access, improved supply chain efficiency, and a more sustainable alternative to road transportation. Railway officials said the project will contribute to freight revenue, while encouraging businesses to adopt rail-based logistics solutions. In addition, the Ahmedabad Division continues to expand commodity-focused freight services, including edible oil transportation to Jammu & Kashmir. The move reflects Indian Railways’ growing focus on modernizing freight operations, boosting regional trade, and creating a more efficient national logistics network.
