Indian Railways is strengthening its freight infrastructure with Visakhapatnam emerging as a key maintenance hub for new 9,000 HP electric freight locomotives. The city will form part of a four-location support network set up to manage servicing and upkeep of the high-capacity engines. While the locomotives are being produced at the Dahod manufacturing facility in Gujarat, maintenance operations will be handled through depots in Raipur, Kharagpur, and Pune. The initiative aims to improve locomotive reliability, minimise operational downtime, and enhance efficiency across major cargo corridors. With demand continuing to grow, the project is likely to support faster cargo transportation and strengthen Indian Railways’ move to modern and energy-efficient cargo operations.
